What do you do when a Girlfriend dies? That’s what I’m asking myself after the death of my Girlfriend Kim. With the blessing of her family, I wrote this blog to workout my own issues, celebrate a wonderful life and figure out how we can help our Girlfriends in both life and death.

I sat there grinning ear to ear as both of my children received the Hero Award at camp. I was so proud they not only survived but thrived a whole week at camp without ANY cell phones, iphones are X-boxes. The camp leader laughed that all the kids had made it by just fine without all that stuff. Gulp… that comment was ironic since I was in withdraws from no cell or internet service myself. Could I survive without social media. Luckily, I found out being unplugged DOESN’T mean the end of the world.

Exactly one year ago, I was facing a layoff of a 20yr TV career, major surgery and a lightning strike to my house. Talk about a reality check: my health, career and home all literally and figuratively struck a year ago this month. I was about as low as a person could get. How did I turn it all around in ONE year? I didn’t do it alone! How I learned a huge key to success that they don’t teach in business school.

As I sat at my daughter’s rehearsal this morning, I should have been all smiles and full of pride. But I wasn’t it. I wasn’t watching her steps and enjoying her smile. No… instead I was tense, preoccupied and frantically answering emails on my iPhone. Yep, I felt guilty for working when I should have been playing. But hey, maybe I was working BECAUSE I felt guilty for playing when I should have been working. Did I lose you? Welcome to the world of GUILT… and why we need to shed it!

A true and trusted Girlfriend is something you learn and earn over time. A good Girlfriend can help you become a better mom, wife, worker, and Girlfriend. But a bad girlfriend (notice no capitalization) can be a cancer that can destroy you. Not all girlfriends are created equal. Choose wisely. Oh, I should mention that in this blog, I’m changing the names to protect the guilty.

Collaboration can mean more than promotion… it can mean DOLLAR SIGNS!! Why, as women, do we sometimes stop short of working together to help our bottom line? Girlfriends, we are more power TOGETHER than we are as individuals. Few people know that better than Laurie Baggett. Watch and learn, Girls! She practices what she preaches…

It was one year ago this month that my career, health, and home were all literally and figuratively struck. This is concerning the business side of how I TOTALLY reinvented myself because, yes, I was a mess a year ago. Here are the things that business schools won’t teach you. How do I know that? My lessons came from the life of hard knocks!

The question left me speechless. “What can we do to help you get what you want”. Who?… me? As my palms began to sweat, I realized I’d never actually told anyone what I wanted or truly need. In one day, I learned not only what I really needed from networking and how to ask for it.
