I sat there grinning ear to ear as both of my children received the Hero Award at camp. I was so proud they not only survived but thrived a whole week at camp without ANY cell phones, iphones are X-boxes. The camp leader laughed that all the kids had made it by just fine without all that stuff. Gulp… that comment was ironic since I was in withdraws from no cell or internet service myself. Could I survive without social media. Luckily, I found out being unplugged DOESN’T mean the end of the world.

It was one year ago this month that my career, health, and home were all literally and figuratively struck. This is concerning the business side of how I TOTALLY reinvented myself because, yes, I was a mess a year ago. Here are the things that business schools won’t teach you. How do I know that? My lessons came from the life of hard knocks!

Exactly one year ago, I was facing a layoff of a 20yr TV career, major surgery and a lightning strike to my house. Talk about a reality check: my health, career and home all literally and figuratively struck a year ago this month. I was about as low as a person could get. How did I turn it all around in ONE year? As I sat at my daughter’s rehearsal this morning, I should have been all smiles and full of pride. But I wasn’t it. I wasn’t watching her steps and enjoying her smile. No… instead I was tense, preoccupied and frantically answering emails on my iPhone. Yep, I felt guilty for working when I should have been playing.
